Netflix Cancels Six Upcoming Games, Claims It's 'Adjusting' Its Portfolio
Netflix is known for much more than just TV shows and movies—its growing library of mobile video games has also attracted attention. As part of its subscription, Netflix offers over 100 mobile games, all available for free, no matter which subscription tier you’re on.
Some popular titles, such as Hades, Sonic Mania Plus, and Immortality, are available to subscribers, and Netflix has been investing heavily in the gaming side of things in recent years. However, it seems that subscribers haven’t fully embraced the gaming offerings, and now, Netflix is scaling back its gaming efforts.
The company has already started removing certain games from its catalog and has also canceled several that were supposed to be released in the future. That said, many of these games will still be available on other platforms.
One of the first games to be axed is Compass Point: West, which was Netflix’s very first game announcement but was released back in 2015 and never made its way to the Netflix platform. Another canceled title is Don’t Starve Together, a popular co-op survival game that Netflix had planned to bring to mobile, though it’s still available on multiple other platforms.
Next on the list is Lab Rat, a puzzle game that is still playable elsewhere, and Rotwood, a beat-‘em-up that’s currently in early access on Steam. One of the biggest cancellations is Tales of the Shire: A Lord of the Rings Game, which was originally set to launch in 2024 but has now been scrapped for Netflix. It will still be released on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and Steam.
Lastly, Thirsty Suitors, which was also announced for Netflix last year, won’t be launching on the streaming service but will still be available on other platforms.
A Netflix spokesperson explained that these cancellations are part of the company’s ongoing effort to "adjust our portfolio" based on what its members are most interested in. While Netflix is stepping back from some game releases, they recently launched Squid Game: Unleashed, a hugely successful game that was released alongside the second season of the popular show. It looks like the company might focus more on tie-in games like this in the future.
